The Fall

I finished reading The Fall by Guillermo del Toro last night. The best way to explain the experience is to simply say that this morning when I woke up I thought the entire story was real! I woke up with this feeling of unease and it wasn't until after my first cup of coffee that I realized the anxiety was because of the book! It is a really good book! There is one more in the trilogy but I have no idea when it will be released!

Yes, the book is about vampires but they are not beautiful, sparkly vampires. They are horrific, scary, bloodsucking vampires! They are taking over the entire world and will keep a few lucky humans alive to use as livestock for their feeding. The Strain Trilogy is an apocolyptic story about the fall of mankind. I definitely recommend it!

Research

My colleague and coauthor submitted our paper to the Academy of Management Conference yesterday. The conference will be held in San Antonio in August. I am not really interested in going to San Antonio. I have been there and after living in Texas for two years I do not ever want to go back.

The paper is however, pretty interesting. We wanted to look at whether environmental management reputation impacted stock price. We took the Newsweek Green Rankings list of the 500 largest US companies and determined if being on that list increased or decreased stock price. The results showed that for the 30 days following the press release stock price was impacted. The top 100 firms (with positive reputations) experienced a significant increase in stock price while the bottom 100 (with low scores) experienced a decrease in stock price. I am generalizing the results however, the overall picture is accurate.

We are going to send it out to a journal next. Hopefully it will be accepted at the conference and my colleague will present it and then it will be published in a journal!

Fresh Start

A new semester is about to begin. It is my favorite time of year! The previous semester is put to bed (usually) and it is time to start over again. Any mistakes I made last semester can be corrected and I have a chance to redeem myself! The beginning of a new semester always brings students excited about the possibilities and the hopes for an A!

The new semester starts Friday and I am so excited! This will be the best one yet!

Give it another try!

Okay, so I have not blogged in 9 months but this is now a New Year's Resolution! My other resolution is to keep my blog positive and only use it occasionally for venting or negative ranting! With all of that being said I have some of both to share!

First, we spent our first Christmas here in like 5 years! I really loved the quiet and the time that Alex and I spent together during Christmas. We also went to eat Christmas dinner with good friends so we weren't alone at all! My favorite gift was from Alex - Scene It Twilight Saga Edition with all three Twilight movies! We played Christmas morning and I won! For some reason, no one else wants to play me!

There are a few "ventable" events but I will not go into them now. LEave it to say that a student is appealing his final grade and has indicated that he will go all the way to top to get the grade changed. He has very little chance of succeeding but I still must jump through the hoops at each step of the process. It is aggravating to say the least.

OKay and here is one more interesting piece of news - I have a phone interview with a university in California on Friday! CSU Channel Islands (google them) asked me for a phone interview!!! If things go well then they might fly  me out for a campus interview. I am so excited and nervous at the same time! I am worried mostly about the house and can I sell it and still cover the mortgage!

Random Musings

OMG - If you did not see last week's LOST or if you plan to ever watch LOST then you probable shouldn't read this!

1. A CORK? That is so cool! It makes complete sense! I love the idea of the island being a cork that holds back the darkness and evil! I hate that Sayid has turned and has no soul. I really thought he could have redeemed himself and found pennance. If Richard Alpert could not repent and be forgiven than I guess Sayid would not be able to either.

2. The Teenage Mutant bought me a Motorola Droid this weekend. I love it! Of course, he got one for himself...mine was part of the buy one get one free. He ended up spending 440.00 dollars, will get 200.00 dollars back in rebates but then will have to pay 170.00 in cancellation fees at Sprint. We now have Verizon and it has much better coverage at home and at ECU. It is a bit more expensive for the service but I think it is worth it.

3. I have been spoiling for a fight lately, as if you couldn't already tell. I feel pretty out of control.

4. A CORK? I just LOVE that concept! Oh, and I am ready for more scenes involving Sawyer! Wooo hoooo!

5. I need to curb my spending habits. I have been spending too much money lately.

6. American Idol is on tonight. I can't wait to see what Crystal has planned. She is by far my favorite! I really want her hair. I wonder if I could find someone to do dreadlocks for me? Hmmm......that is definitely an idea!

7. I just saw a news report that showed State Troopers sitting on the side of the road in a DOT Truck with a radar gun. They sit there incognito and clock drivers. When they clock someone speeding they radio it in to another trooper that will then chase down the speeder and give them a citation. I do not think I like the idea of a trooper hiding out in a DOT vehicle.

A Horrible Week

What an absolutely horrible week this has been! I think it really started last week and just got progressively worse. I am not perfect and I have lots of buttons that can be pushed. I can be overly opinionated, I can be stubborn, I can be judgemental. I am however also intelligent, strong, capable, and passionate. If there is one thing that I cannot tolerate it is to be dismissed, ignored, or patronized. It seemed like that has happened often these past two weeks.

It is difficult to be a woman working with older white men that are accustomed to being in control and in charge. They become so accustomed to being in charge, making decisions, and getting by without being questioned. They resist anyone asking "Why is it this way? or How did you reach that conclusion?" They automatically assume their ability and ethics are being questioned. They begin to actually believe that they can control every situation, every decision, and always get their way.

There are plenty people, both women and men, that will roll over, that will do as they are told, and that will just go along. I am not one such person. I have my own ideas, my own opinions, and my own beliefs. I also know when to fight a battle and when to live to fight another day. That is my current strategy. I will keep quiet for now, I will not "stir the pot", I will not question the process. However, these men will eventually have to deal with me and with others that have the same ideas and opinions. You see, I am not alone. I have support, more support than they realize. Therefore, I will have my day, my time, and my vindication. So, dismiss me now, ignore me now, and say that my opinion is not valid. You are only putting off the inevitable. I will be heard.

The Library

My teenage mutant went to the tutor today and I went with him. He goes to a wonderful tutor twice a week for HO Precalculus. Tutor is a retired public high school teacher that taught this class for many many years. She now tutors students and apparently LOVES it! Anyway, Tutor has sessions at the library. I had not been to the library in years. I have been to worse libraries but the one in my town is not a great one, I have been to much better libraries. I guess it is a function of the city really. Anyway, while it is sitll not a great library I was motivated! I must have picked up 20 books I decided I must read. Some were cookbooks, gardening books, fiction, non fiction, biographies, history books, etc. The list goes on. In fact, I have decided what I am reading next... The World is Flat! I have had it on my shelf for a couple of years of now and I finally ready to dig in! Wish me luck!
